Bioenergy

Stimulating bioenergy (ethanol, biodiesel, biogas) development in Alberta is the focus of the Nine Point Bioenergy Plan. This biorefining energy plan encompasses new program initiatives and addresses policy resolutions to help with market access and stability.

Bioenergy is the first step in a much larger vision of creating high value products through a biorefining approach to agriculture and forestry biomass integrated with our energy sector.

Seizing the Future Bio-refining Opportunity

With its canola, grains and livestock and forestry base, Alberta has the opportunity to provide a consistent feed stock supply to bioenergy processing facilities. The expansion will also offer an opportunity for all agricultural producers to gain a position in the bioenergy value chain beyond the farm gate. It has the potential to offer sustainable economic solutions to environmental concerns currently facing the industry.

Grants are available through the Biorefining Commercialization and Market Development Program and the Bioenergy Infrastructure Development Program to encourage the growth of a sustainable bioenergy industry.

The funding deadline for these programs has been extended from 2009 to 2011.  In addition, the five million dollar cap on grants under these programs has been revised.
