What is a Renewable Fuels Standard?

A renewable fuels standard is a government requirement to blend either ethanol or biodiesel into commercial fuels. Alberta’s Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) was announced as part of the Provincial Energy Strategy on December 11, 2008.

Renewable energy sources are making an increasingly important contribution to Alberta’s energy portfolio and meeting our objective of clean energy production.

The RFS will require five per cent ethanol content in gasoline and two per cent renewable content in diesel by 2010.  To meet the standard, greenhouse gas emissions over the production and manufacturing life cycle of the renewable fuel must be at least 25 per cent lower than emissions from producing and manufacturing the same quantity of traditional fossil fuels.
